Roll and Count - Beginning Counting Game

My little one can count aloud from 1 to 20 (from all of our games of Hide N Seek), but she has trouble with one to one correspondence which is the ability to count only 1 number for each object. For example, she might point to one object and say 1, 2 instead of 1. So that is why I decided to give this game a try with her.

I made a die with numbers 1-3 written on it. I used a light bulb box, but you could use a foam cube or wrap a kleenex box with paper and write on that. You also need an ice cube tray and counters. I used garden stones because we already had those on hand and there's just something about the shiny rocks that make my kids excited to play with them. You could use cereal, m&ms, blocks, pom poms, erasers, etc.

The game is simple - roll the die, say the number you rolled, and put that many counters into the ice cube tray. It helped N to count the garden stones on the floor first before putting them into the ice cube tray. This was a really fun game for us to play together that we will definitely play again!

  2. This is a great idea! He is interested in counting because he hears and sees big sister doing it. This is a great way to get started!
